US Open 2026 Quarterfinals: Schedule, Matches & Predictions

The US Open has reached the stage where reputations stop paying the bills.

Eight players remain in each singles draw, and from here every match carries the weight of a tournament. There is no room for a bad afternoon, a loose service game or one of those mysterious days when a player suddenly forgets where the court ends.

The 2026 US Open quarterfinals begin on Tuesday, September 8, with the remaining quarterfinals played on Wednesday. The tournament is being held at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York, with the men's final scheduled for September 13.

And already, there are some tasty battles waiting.

What Does the Quarterfinal Stage Mean?

If you're new to tennis, the quarterfinals are simply the last eight stage.

Unlike a league, players don't collect points across the tournament and wait for a table to decide the winner. The US Open is a knockout competition.

Lose, and you're going home.

In men's singles, quarterfinal matches are played best of five sets, meaning the first player to win three sets takes the match. Women's singles matches are best of three sets, with the first player to win two moving on.

Simple enough.

The difficult part is actually winning.

Alcaraz vs Shelton: The American Challenge

One of the biggest confirmed men's quarterfinals is Carlos Alcaraz vs Ben Shelton.

Defending champion Alcaraz has looked increasingly dangerous in New York after returning from a wrist injury that kept him away from singles competition for almost five months.

He dismantled Tommy Paul 6-4, 6-3, 6-4 in the fourth round and has now won 18 consecutive Grand Slam matches. It is also his fifth US Open quarterfinal in six appearances.

Shelton, meanwhile, gave American fans another reason to believe.

The eighth seed swept Stefanos Tsitsipas 6-2, 6-3, 6-4, producing one of his sharpest performances of the tournament. He is now trying to become the first American man since Andy Roddick in 2003 to win a Grand Slam singles title.

Prediction: Alcaraz to advance.

Shelton has the serve and athleticism to make this uncomfortable, but Alcaraz currently looks like a man who has remembered exactly why everyone was so worried about him before the tournament began.

Tiafoe vs Michelsen: America Gets Another Showdown

The Americans are having quite a party in New York.

Frances Tiafoe will face Alex Michelsen in another all-American quarterfinal.

Tiafoe produced one of the performances of the fourth round, defeating former champion Daniil Medvedev 7-6, 6-4, 7-6. He is now 10-0 in matches played at Louis Armstrong Stadium and will move to Arthur Ashe Stadium for the rest of his campaign.

Michelsen is the less familiar name, but that may not last long.

The 22-year-old has reached his first Grand Slam quarterfinal without dropping a set and defeated Tomas Martin Etcheverry in straight sets. He has also lost both previous meetings with Tiafoe, giving the more experienced American the psychological edge.

Prediction: Tiafoe to advance.

But this could be much closer than the rankings suggest. Michelsen has nothing to lose, while Tiafoe suddenly has an American tennis revival sitting on his shoulders.

No pressure, then.

Sabalenka vs Noskova: Champion Meets Wimbledon Winner

On the women's side, Aryna Sabalenka vs Linda Noskova is already set.

Sabalenka, the world No. 1 and two-time defending champion, defeated Taylor Townsend 6-4, 6-3 to reach her sixth consecutive US Open quarterfinal. She has also won 17 straight matches at the tournament.

Standing opposite her will be Wimbledon champion Noskova.

The sixth seed survived a brutal encounter with Marta Kostyuk, winning 7-5, 5-7, 6-4 after saving six match points. She has now reached her deepest run in New York.

The problem?

Sabalenka has won both of their previous meetings.

Prediction: Sabalenka to advance.

Noskova has the game to trouble her, but Sabalenka's power, experience and familiarity with the later stages of this tournament make her the obvious favourite.

Pegula vs Navarro: An All-American Women's Quarterfinal

America gets another home-grown quarterfinal, this time between Jessica Pegula and Emma Navarro.

Pegula, the No. 3 seed and 2024 runner-up, defeated Sorana Cirstea 6-3, 6-4 to reach the last eight. She is chasing a first Grand Slam title and another deep run in New York.

Navarro then beat Anna Kalinskaya 6-4, 6-2, returning to the US Open quarterfinals for the first time since her breakthrough semifinal run in 2024.

Prediction: Pegula to advance.

Experience may prove decisive, although Navarro is precisely the sort of opponent who can make a favourite question every life decision that brought them onto a tennis court.

What About the Other Quarterfinals?

The remaining quarterfinal places are being decided on Monday, September 7.

On the women's side, Coco Gauff faces Iva Jovic, while Iga Swiatek meets Zheng Qinwen. Elena Rybakina faces Naomi Osaka, and Mirra Andreeva takes on Anastasia Potapova.

The men's draw is also still taking shape, with Alexander Zverev facing Luciano Darderi, while Francisco Cerundolo meets Alexander Blockx and Learner Tien faces Karen Khachanov.

So it would be premature to carve the entire quarterfinal bracket into stone just yet.

The singles quarterfinals are scheduled for:

The tournament schedule places the quarterfinal sessions across the day and evening, with the action continuing through Arthur Ashe and Louis Armstrong Stadium.

Who Looks Most Likely to Win?

At this stage, Alcaraz and Sabalenka look like the players carrying the biggest favourite tags.

Alcaraz has returned from injury looking increasingly comfortable with every match, while Sabalenka is attempting to win a third consecutive US Open title, a feat that would put her in rare company.

But this is precisely where predictions become dangerous.

One bad set can change the mood.

One tiebreak can turn a favourite into a spectator.

And one player catching fire at Flushing Meadows can make rankings look about as useful as an umbrella in a hurricane.

The quarterfinals are where the US Open stops being about surviving the draw and starts becoming about seizing the trophy.
